Let’s be honest. Most store-bought pizza sauces aren’t very good. I’ve tried almost every pizza sauce I’ve come across, and they vary hugely in quality and flavor. So what is the best store-bought pizza sauce? Amongst all the sauces I’ve tried, there is one sauce that stands out.
What to look for in a good pizza sauce
When you’re looking for a good pizza sauce, the most important thing to look for is quality ingredients. The best flavor profile is obviously subjective, but quality ingredients will make a better sauce.
Personally, I’m a huge fan of simple, Neapolitan-style pizza sauce. Classic Neapolitan pizza sauce only consists of a few simple ingredients (San Marzano tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, sea salt, and fresh basil), with tomatoes being the main ingredient. This gives a clean sauce where the tomato flavor is the star of the show.
When you buy pizza sauce you usually get what you pay for. Cheap pizza sauces rarely contain good ingredients. They’re often made from less flavorful tomatoes and contain cheap sweeteners and other things to hide the flavor, in addition to conservatives and other things you don’t need or want in your pizza sauce.
The best store-bought pizza sauce – Mutti Pizza Sauce Spices
The best store-bought pizza sauce I’ve tried is the Mutti Pizza Sauce Spices. This sauce was recommended to me by a well-known chef, so I had to give it a try. And it did not disappoint!
Mutti Pizza Sauce Spices, also sometimes called Classica is a flavorful pizza sauce with a strong, fresh tomato flavor. And that’s the main reason this sauce stands out. It’s a tomato sauce that actually tastes like tomatoes! The main ingredient of the sauce (99%), is high-quality, fresh Italian tomatoes.
In addition to tomatoes, the sauce also tastes like basil and oregano. Perhaps a tad too much for my taste, but it’s still a great pizza sauce!
Mutti is specialized in canned tomatoes and is one of the biggest producers in Italy. And they also export a lot of canned tomatoes all over the world, so their products are available in a variety of countries. They are considered number one on canned tomatoes in Italy and have been in business for more than 100 years.
Even though Mutti is growing in the US, it’s unfortunately not that available yet. Luckily you can get it from Amazon.

Even though Mutti Pizza Sauce Spices is the best store-bought pizza sauce I’ve tried, it still doesn’t beat a homemade Neapolitan pizza sauce. It might surprise you, but making your own homemade pizza sauce is surprisingly easy, and takes only a few simple ingredients, and a few minutes to prepare.
Making homemade pizza sauce is easy!
Making your own homemade pizza sauce is super easy and takes less than 5 minutes. Classic Neapolitan pizza sauce is easier to make than you think. And it only requires a few simple ingredients.
Personally, I rarely use store-bought pizza sauce simply because it’s so easy to make authentic Neapolitan-style pizza sauce at home. All you need is:
- One 400g (14oz) can of tomatoes (preferably San Marzano tomatoes)
- 4g (a little less than 1 teaspoon) of sea salt
- 3-4 leaves of fresh basil
- 15g (1 tablespoon) of extra virgin olive oil
Quality canned tomatoes beat store-bought pizza sauce
The main ingredient in any pizza sauce is tomatoes. You can use fresh, or canned tomatoes, it’s totally up to you.
I’m often asked if canned tomatoes are as good as fresh ones for pizza sauce. And canned tomatoes actually work really well, because they’re canned when the tomatoes are at their best. So if you want to make pizza sauce out of tomato season canned tomatoes are your best bet!
How to make homemade pizza sauce
All you need to do is combine all the ingredients and mix well. I recommend letting the sauce sit a bit before using it, as the sauce will absorb the basil flavor more when you give it some time.
