I’m lucky to live near a couple of specialty cheese shops, and really love to go in and try the different cheeses. But I know a lot of people out there don’t have this option, and are struggling to get good cheese for their pizza. Luckily the internet came to the rescue! In this article, I will teach you everything you need to know about shopping for pizza cheese online.

Why Should You Buy Pizza Cheese Online?

Not everyone has a local cheese vendor, and even if you do, you’re limited by the selection of your local store. Online cheese shopping opens you to a whole new world of cheese that your local stores can’t offer.

Another key point is price, buying cheese online is often cheaper, especially if you buy larger quantities. And there are a lot of different stores out there offering cheese.

Where to Buy Pizza Cheese Online

There are a lot of options out there, but here are two of my favorite stores for shopping pizza cheese online.

Amazon

This might be obvious, but Amazon.com (affiliate link) is a great option, that ships cheese all across the world. Amazon has a really wide selection of cheese. They have everything from French and Italian specialties to cheap American cheese.

Murray’s Cheese

If you live in the US, Murray’s Cheese is a great shop. It started as a specialty foods retailer in New York City that specializes in cheese, but now they are all over the country. They have a wide selection of great cheese. Murray’s Cheese is a specialty store, so they don’t have the cheapest cheese, but keep in mind that you get what you pay for. So if you’re looking for something special, I really recommend checking it out.

They hand-cut their cheese every day and wrap it in cheese paper to protect the cheese during shipping. The cheese comes in a thermal lined box that keeps it cool and keeps it from drying out during shipping.

Pizza Cheese Online – Recommendations

Mozzarella

Mozzarella is my go-to cheese for pizza making and one of my favorite cheeses. Honestly, I use it for 99% of my pizzas.

Mozzarella is a traditional Italian soft cheese that originates from the Naples area. Traditionally it’s made from buffalo milk, but these days, local variations are made all over the world.

Mozzarella cheese has a soft texture and a light milky flavor. because of its softness, it melts easily and is therefore ideal for pizza.

I prefer fresh mozzarella, because because it tastes much better than the pre-shredded ones. Fresh mozzarella often comes in a bag or box with liquids. It’s important to drain the cheese properly before you use it, to avoid adding a lot of unnecessary moisture to your pizza. If you use shredded mozzarella, it usually has starch added to it, to avoid sticking in the bad. This burns easily, so you should keep an eye on your pizza, especially if you use a hot oven. I recommend sticking to the fresh mozzarella if possible.

Parmesan

Another cheese I use a lot is parmesan cheese. This is also Italian, but unlike mozzarella, it’s an aged, hard cheese that originates from the Parma region in northern Italy. Usually, parmesan is aged for 12-36 months and therefore has a pretty sharp, complex flavor.

When using parmesan cheese on pizza, you should shred it, and add it to the pizza after it comes out of the oven. The reason for this is that because it’s a very hard cheese, it doesn’t melt in the oven, and baking it will ruin the taste.

Pecorino

Pecorino is Parmesan’s less known cousin. Another hard, aged Italian cheese, that is made from sheep milk. Pecorino is aged shorter than parmesan and is a bit milder.

As for the parmesan cheese, you should also add pecorino as a garnish after you take your pizza out of the oven.

Cheddar

Cheddar is also one of my favorite pizza cheeses. Cheddar has a rich, full flavor, that goes really well with salty pepperoni on an American-style pizza. Because cheddar can have a pretty strong flavour it’s a nice cheese to mix with other types of cheese. Cheddar and mozzarella are a great combination!
